As a consequence of the importance of fish farming in Norway, fish health is now an integrated part of the curriculum at The Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (NVH) and basic disciplines like fish anatomy, physiology, microbiology and pharmacology are covered in the general courses covering these disciplines.
Fish diseases and fish health is dealt with in specific lectures covering fish diseases and a course in fish histopathology in 7th semester. A manadatory practical field course over ten days in an intensive fish farming area is also given in the spring of the 8th semester. The courses emphasises the pathophysiological and histopathological processes that are relevant for fish and the health and welfare problems encountered in Norwegian aquaculture. Many students choose different aspects of fish medicine as their elective in their degree project in the last year.
Post-graduate education
Numerous doctoral theses covering many different aspects of fish health have emerged from NVH during the last 15 years and include topics in pathology, epidemiology, pharmacology, parasitology, bacteriology etc. Post-graduate training for a doctoral degree is normally done within an effective three-year period of research training.
Courses and Conferences
The extensive competence in the institutions at Adamstuen necessarily leads to external sharing of knowledge. Specific courses, lasting from one day to a few weeks, are offered and are in many cases facilitated by VESO on behalf of e.g. NVH. Several International conferences have also been arranged in the past and will be in the future.
