Bacteriology

By Henning Sørum, Professor

The bacteriological unit at the Section of Microbiology and Immunology, NSVS has three main topics in research related to aquamedicine.

1. Taxonomic studies related to Vibrio bacteria are focused towards improving diagnostics and research specificity in the field of fish disease.

2. Studies of virulence and pathogenicity factors in bacteria causing fish disease are concentrated around adherence and iron utilization.

3. The genetic background of antibiotic resistance in fish pathogenic bacteria is studied with focus on aeromonads and vibrions.

In all fields the methods involved are mainly molecular and the research is performed in collaboration with the Section of Fish Health at the National Veterinary Institute and various other partners nationally and internationally.

The Fish Bacteriology Section of the National Veterinary Institute has primary focus on:
- Providing service to fish health workers/ fish farming industry based on diagnostics of bacteria causing disease in farmed finfish, crustaceans and molluscs.
- Development of diagnostic methodology (both traditional and molecular).
- Taxonomy of "new" pathogens.
