Parasitology

By Tor Atle Mo, Head of Section for Parasitology

The parasitology section at the National Veterinary Institute (NVI) is responsible for diagnostics and research on parasites of farmed and wild fish in Norway.

We are recognised as specialists on the Norwegian salmon killer, the monogenean Gyrodactylus salaris, and are listed as the official reference laboratory of OIE on this parasite. The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis, and hexamitid flagellates on wild and farmed salmonids have also been main topics in our research over the last years. As in almost every branch of biological research, the main theme for fish parasitology at NVI for the next years will be application of molecular biology in several aspects.
