At the National Veterinary Institute (VI) and The Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (NVH), several ongoing research projects investigate the immune response in fish after infection. Central projects are monitoring the nature of the humoral immune response in halibut and both the cellular and humoral immune response in salmon following ISAV-infection and "vaccination" with ISAV DNA constructs. These projects are collaborations between the Sections of Immune Prophylaxis and Virology/Serology at VI and divisions at NVH.

Also, the Section of Immune Prophylaxis (VI) works actively with developing efficient antibody detection methods against infectious agents; on a commission basis antibody detection methods have been developed against A. salmonicidae, V. anguillarum, V. viscosus, and IPNV in sera from fish.

Vaccinology

The science of disease control by vaccination is a rapidly emerging field of both human and animal medical sciences. In aquaculture, vaccination contributes to sustainable fish farming by preventing disease outbreaks and reducing morbidity and mortality, creating major benefits to both animal health and welfare, and to the fish farmer's economy. Vaccination of fish has also proved extremely effective to reduce the use of antibiotics in food production.

The second International IABS Symposium on Fish Vaccinology was held in Oslo June 5-7. 1996. The meeting was organised by VESO in collaboration with the veterinary academic institutions. The very comprehensive proceedings (Developments in Biological Standardisation vol 90) is the currently most authoritative publication on the subject. The third symposium in this series, scheduled for April 9-11, 2003 in Bergen will also be organised by VESO.

VESO provides contract research in development and testing of fish vaccines, and employs scientific personnell experienced in the design and interpretation of fish vaccine trials. The Department of Immunoprophylaxis of the National Veterinary Institute has good expertise in immune response assessments in fish, and is the expert advisor of the Norwegian government in animal vaccination issues including fish. Immunology research relating to fish vaccinology is also being conducted at several laboratories of the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science.
